[News from the Park Record Online]
The Olympic IBC and MPC will be in the Salt Palace Convention Center, covering four square blocks in the center of the city and surrounded by several major hotels. Built in 1969 as the city's premiere multi-use convention and entertainment facility, the Salt Palace Convention Center is currently undergoing an $80 million renovation, scheduled for completion in October 1995.
The facility will have approximately 32,000 square meters of work space with state-of-the-art technical facilities. Six major convention halls, four with 4,500 square meters and two with 1,500 square meters, can easily accommodate 20,000 participants. Adjacent to the major halls will be ballrooms, private halls, auditoriums, and meeting rooms with 3,316 square meters of space. Optical-fiber networks will be installed in the Convention Center, with universal points connecting to the Olympic infrastructure which will allow for high-resolution broadcasting.
Accessing from three major highways with 4 to 6-lanes, the facility also offers street level loading docks for heavy equipment. A great advantage of the facility is its orginal function and purpose. The Salt Palace Convention Center has been hosting a multitude of events ranging from the Radio and Television News Director's Association, to the National Figure Skating Championships.
In 1990 and 1993, members of the IOC Radio and Television Commission reviewed the Salt Palace Convention Center before the renovations had started and gave it high ratings. The renovated facility is expected to meet or exceed the high standards required as an Olympic IBM/MPC.
