Salt Lake City 2002: The Future

Telecommunications

25,000 km of fiber-optic cable are installed in the Salt Lake City Area that has been enhanced by more than one billion dollars in infrastructure. The system processes more than two million inbound calls per day. Ninety-one percent of all access lines are served by electronic switching centers with integrated service digital networks (ISDN).
The existing telecommunications and information technology infrastructures and high level of technology expertise in the Salt Lake City area reflect a firm committment to innovations in telecommunications. This committment is reflected in plans for the Winter Olympic 2002 Main Media Center to be linked via fiber optic cable to all major Olympic venues.
Comstat General represents international satellite organizations in the area and numerous private companies operate domestic satellite communications systems as well. Currently the modern fiber network is operating under capacity and the ability to host the Olympic Winter Games is well within its capabilities today.

Caring for the Environment"

Six specific environmental studies have been conducted on the major sports areas. No new roads or ski areas will be necessary since all alpine events are scheduled for established ski resort properties. The long-standing Citizen's Environmental Advisory Committee consults and advises the Salt Lake Olympic Bid Committee on a regular basis.

the favorable results of these efforts were highlighted when the Utah Winter Sports Park was presented an award for its environmentally sensitive design by the International Olympic Committee.
